Get to Know Forte: Five Questions with Claire Langland-Johnson
1. What first got you interested in real estate?
My journey into real estate began quite unexpectedly. One of my initial roles was through a temporary agency, which placed me at a commercial real estate firm for what was intended to be a short-term assignment of 2-3 weeks. However, this opportunity turned into a rewarding experience that lasted over three years. Since that time, I transitioned from a temporary position to roles such as HR/Legal Assistant, Real Estate Coordinator, and Lease Administrator. This diverse exposure has allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the commercial real estate sector. I have been passionate about working in this industry ever since.
2. What type of business do you most like to work with?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of companies. Each business, regardless of its size or industry, brings its own unique challenges and opportunities. This variety keeps my work dynamic and engaging.
I thrive on partnering with our clients to meet their unique needs. Each client brings specific requirements, and I find great satisfaction in getting to know them. Building strong relationships with each team and gaining a deep understanding of their distinct cultures and workflows is incredibly fulfilling. This approach allows me to be the best partner possible, ensuring that we deliver tailored solutions that truly support their goals.
3. If you could be doing anything else except working, what would it be?
If I could be doing anything else besides working, I would immerse myself in travel and outdoor activities. I love exploring new places and cultures, and spending time outside is incredibly rejuvenating for me. Whether it’s taking long walks, gardening, or participating in community events and festivals, I find great joy in being active and engaged with my surroundings. My bucket list trips are Italy, Czech Republic (Prague), Ireland, Spain, and Portugal. I have checked three out of the five off my list. I am hoping to visit Spain & Portugal in the near future.
Besides international travel, my husband and I have made it our goal to see all 63 National Parks. At this point we have seen more than 2 dozen. Our most recent national park visit was to Acadia in Maine.
I also love listening to podcasts – I’m a bit of a podcast junkie. My favorite podcasts are Radiolab, Science Vs, Heavyweight, Curious Minnesota and Duolingo Spanish Podcast.
4. What role have sports (or hobbies) played in your life? How has that supported your career?
Sports and hobbies have played a significant role in my life, even though I haven’t excelled at them. I’ve tried just about every sport and discovered that I don’t have an athletic bone in my body. However, these experiences have taught me valuable lessons. I’ve learned the importance of trying new things, not letting the fear of being bad at something hold me back and maintaining a sense of humor about myself. These lessons have been incredibly supportive in my career, encouraging me to embrace challenges, stay open to new opportunities, and approach my work with a positive and resilient mindset.
5. Prior to working in real estate, what other jobs have you held?
I’ve always enjoyed variety in my work. I have had a wide assortment of jobs over the past two decades including working at a bowling alley/pool hall, nursing home, pizza restaurant, daycare/nanny, vacuum and microwave sales at a department store, and school board liaison. I’ve done volunteer work at a local hospital, the Domestic Abuse Hotline, and taught English as a second language to adult learners. I currently hold two other jobs working in events/banquets at a hotel and special event catering. I like that each job requires a different type of skillset and problem solving.
