  • Long-Term Strategic Planning
  • Market Expertise
  • Identified Available Properties for Second Mental Health Treatment Facility
  • Site Selection
  • Lease Negotiation

Challenge

Children’s Minnesota wanted to create a second out-patient location for mental health treatment that was welcoming, warm, and offered therapies during the weekday. Their goal was to find a North suburban location with a variety of spaces for treatments and gathering to offer continued intensive outpatient therapy for kids and teens who leave the hospital or can be an option to prevent hospitalization.

Strategy

After opening its first partial hospitalization program (PHP) in July 2021 at its Specialty Center in Lakeville, Children’s Minnesota saw the immediate impact in reduced hospitalizations and in-patient care needed for these children and young adults. Since Steve Brown and Katie Trevena worked to identify the first location, they leveraged their knowledge of the market of available properties and why the first location worked.

Results

After reviewing options in Arden Hills, New Brighton, Roseville and Shoreview, Children’s selected a space in Roseville that offered easy parking, secure space, and the right type of interior configuration that would fit the needs of the patients and providers. The second Children’s Minnesota Mental Health Specialty Clinic offering a mental health partial hospitalization program (PHP) for children and teenagers opened in February 2023. The mental health day treatment program is designed to meet each child’s emotional and behavioral needs through a combination of therapies during weekdays, with the patient returning home to their family on evenings and weekends.

The Roseville PHP is expected to care for approximately 350 children between the ages of 6 and 18. It’s one of the few programs providing this level of acute mental health care to children as young as 6 years old in the east metro. The renovated 8,000 square foot space into a therapeutic, kid-friendly environment that features:

    • An indoor gym to provide recreational therapy for patients.
    • Individual therapies, family therapy, medication management and group therapies, such as music and art therapy.
    • Natural light and calming, sensory-friendly spaces.
